Episode 5: Who is the Holy Spirit?

There are a lot of misunderstandings and misinterpretations about Who the Holy Spirit is and during our episodes on Salvation and Sanctification we mentioned the Holy Spirit, but we felt that it was important for us to have a true understanding of who the Holy Spirit is.

In John 14, the Comforter that Jesus promised has now come on the scene for the New Testament church in Acts and is a gift to all who repent and accept Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The Holy Spirit was just as present in the Old Testament as He is in the New Testament.  The first mention is at creation in Gen 1:2. And while He indwells within every believer in the NT Church, the Old Testament tells us that He came upon a select few.  Joshua (Numbers 27:18), David (1 Sam 16:13) and even King Saul in 1 Sam. 10:10 to name a few, there are other times we see the Spirit come and go as well.

The Holy Spirit is:

Omnipresent - Psalm 139 - No matter where we go, the Spirit is with us.

Omniscient - 1 Cor. 2:10-11 - He knows all things

At Pentecost (Acts 2), The Holy Spirit became a permanent indwelling in ALL believers. Our bodies then become the Temple of God because the Spirit lives within us. 1 Cor. 3:16-17.

We discuss 3 roles of the Holy Spirit:

  1.  The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin - Acts 2:37

  2. The Holy Spirit guides us and gives us gifts - Ephesians 1:17; 1 Cor. 2:9-16

  3. The Holy Spirit is a Comforter - John 14:16; 2 Cor. 1:3-4; Psalm 94:19; John 14:17

Sin has consequences and if we are saved we cannot lose the Holy Spirit, however we can quench and/or grieve the Holy Spirit - 1 Thess. 5:19, Eph 4:30

We can also resist the Holy Spirit when we reject Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior.
